Smoking, which is an addiction, is the most preventable cause of death in our society. That’s why if you (or a loved one) are a smoker, quitting smoking is the most powerful thing you can do for your health. Our Quit Smoking and Win Tip Sheets are meant to help you quit smoking and/or to help you help someone else who is close to you to quit smoking.
Why stop smoking:
- In addition to lung cancer, smoking is associated with cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus (upper intestinal tract), cervix, pancreas, kidney and bladder.
- Because smoking is a major cause of heart disease, COPD (emphysema and chronic bronchitis), stroke, and a variety of other conditions.
- Tobacco smoke contains more than 4,000 chemical compounds including over 40 cancer producing substances (carcinogens).
- The tobacco industry heavily markets smoking in communities of color through advertising and promotion.
- About 1/2
- Because smoking causes 1 out of every 3 cancer deaths in the U.S., including over 8 out of every 10 lung cancer deaths.
- of all smokers begin as teenagers, which means for many, years of ill and early death.
More African Americans smoke than any other racial or ethnic group. Use of smokeless tobacco, such as chewing tobacco and snuff, is also a very addictive habit, and is associated with an increased risk of oral cancer.
Health Power’s Most Important Cigarette Smoking Tips
1. There is no safe way to smoke!
2. Most people who develop lung cancer die from it.
3. Pregnant women who smoke are more likely to have a miscarriage, premature baby, or stillbirth.
4. Menthol cigarettes, which more African Americans smoke, are not safer than non-menthol cigarettes.
5. People who don’t smoke are likely to live longer.
6. Nursing mothers and caregivers who smoke double or triple an infant’s chances of dying from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
