6 Tips to Manage Diabetes

While chronic conditions such as diabetes can create real problems regarding your health, a few lifestyle changes and regularly taking prescribed medications can help you effectively manage this condition and live a healthy life.

Diabetes can be categorized into three major types:

  • Type-I Diabetes This condition usually appears during childhood when your pancreas stops producing sufficient insulin
  • Type-II Diabetes In this condition, either your pancreas produces little or no insulin or your body doesn’t use insulin properly
  • Gestational Diabetes Some women experience this condition during pregnancy, but it usually goes away on its own after the birth of the baby

Regardless of the type of diabetes, the following tips can help you control the symptoms and stay healthy:

1.     Stay Calm

The initial few days after you’re diagnosed with diabetes can be tough. You may find it difficult to come to terms with the fact that this condition will stay with you throughout your life.

However, getting stressed will only worsen the condition and affect your blood sugar levels. So, try to stay calm and avoid getting stressed.

2.     Exercise is Essential

A sedentary lifestyle isn’t only associated with obesity, it also increases blood sugar levels which isn’t good for you.

Now that you’re diagnosed with diabetes, it’s more important than ever to stay active. Exercise on a regular basis, take a walk every morning or join a gym to reduce blood sugar levels with an exercise routine.

3.     Pay Attention to Foot Health Diabetic-Foot-Care

Diabetes increases the risk of nerve damage that especially starts from the feet. So, don’t ignore the health of your feet, and occasionally visit a podiatrist for expert advice.

Don’t walk around barefoot and wear comfortable shoes or slippers. Instead of soaking your feet in hot water, wash them every day with warm water and dry them with a soft and clean towel.

4.     Stay Away from Smoking

To live a healthy lifestyle, avoid smoking. It increases blood sugar levels, constricts your blood vessels, and leads to kidney diseases. If you smoke, it’s time you should quit this habit.

5.     Don’t Ignore Your Dental Health

Diabetes not only affects your blood sugar levels, it also causes higher than usual glucose levels in your saliva. This is the reason why diabetic patients are more prone to experience dental problems. So, brush your teeth twice a day and regularly visit your dentist for dental checkups.

6.     Be Smart about Your Diet

Be cautious of foods that increase blood sugar levels and lead to obesity. Here’s a list of food items that can keep you fit and healthy:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Whole grains
  • Low-fat dairy products
  • Fatty fish
  • Nuts
  • Cinnamon

Getting diagnosed with diabetes doesn’t end your life. Through the right lifestyle choices, you can maintain good blood sugar levels and stay healthy. You may need to consult a dietitian to develop a meal plan and visit your doctor to discuss how you can manage diabetes.
