Breast Health and Breast Cancer
Breast cancer, which occurs in 1 out of 8 women at some time in their lives, can often be cured without breast removal if it’s found and treated early. Also, many lives can be saved as a result. Because of fear of possibly losing a breast, and false images of looking different, many women of color who develop signals of possible breast cancer tend to wait instead of seeing a doctor at once. As a result of not getting an early diagnosis and treatment, unnecessary complications, and even unnecessary death, is more likely in women of color as an overall group, than in White women. Remember that at least 9 out of 10 women with breast cancer can be cured if it’s found and treated early.
