Managed Care refers to the way an individual’s (or family member’s) health care is organized and paid for. Although health maintenance organizations (HMOs) are the best known type of managed care plan, there are many other types. For persons enrolled in a managed care plan, their access to care is determined by the plan. Therefore, it is important to understand how, when, and where access to care is obtained, including hospital services. Specifically, one should understand his or her managed care plan’s benefits, rights, and responsibilities.
