Opportunistic Infection

Opportunistic Infections are serious and often deadly infections that take advantage of a body’s weakened immune or defense system. Opportunistic infections, which are often bacterial, fungal, or viral, do not occur when a person’s immune system is healthy. Many of them, however, can be prevented, or treated when they are diagnosed early. People with advanced HIV infection develop opportunistic infections of the lungs, brain, eyes and other organs, which can be very serious or even life threatening.
