Sciatica – A pain in the lower back and hip which usually travels down the back of the thigh and leg. This condition is often the result of lumbar or lower back discs being out of alignment (out of line), thus stretching or pinching the sciatic nerve.
The symptoms may be improved by lying on one side with the knees pulled up and a pillow between them until the pain decreases. Stretching the legs and lower back may also help as well as taking a non-narcotic pain medicine like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. For very serious cases, more specialized treatment is possible. Exercises to strengthen the abdominal muscles may prevent or decrease future events of sciatica by giving the back better support.
