Are you following The Calorie Balance Formula, which most research experts call The Energy Balance Formula? Both things mean the same thing, and are very important this month, Physical Fitness ans Sports Month, and all year long.:
In order to be healthy and avoid overweight and obesity, you must burn off as many calories as you take in. Or said differently, since calories produce energy, you must get rid of as much energy as you take in. Eating healthy and keeping active are important to EVERYONE – regardless of age, background or ability. Currently, about 1 in 3 adults in the United States are obese and almost 1 in 5 children and adolescents are obese.
The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition highlights the effects of obesity in America as follows:If things don’t change:
- 1/3 of all children born in (or after) 2000 may suffer from diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer and/or asthma as a result of childhood obesity..
- Obesity also impacts personal finances as well. On average, those who are obese have medical costs that are $1,429 more than those of normal weight, which is about 42% higher. Furthermore, nationally, the annual direct costs of childhood obesity are $14.3 billion.
We consider adequate physical activity to be 30 minutes a day for adults, at least 5 days a week, and 60 minutes a day for children 5 days a week. It’s also important to eat healthy, as a combination of both of these practices will:
– Result in positive health benefits, and
– Ensure that you are on the path to a better future.
