Prevention is always better than a cure, and many diseases can either be prevented, or delayed, depending on such things as health knowledge (also called health literacy), degree of high risk lifestyles and health practices, and access to risk reducing healthy foods, safe and regular physical activity, and high quality health services. There are three stages of prevention, each of which needs ongoing attention and support:
Primary Prevention – Doing whatever is possible to keep a disease or illness from every occurring; Secondary
Prevention – Diagnosing and treating the condition as early as possible in order to limit its negative effects; and
Tertiary Prevention – Managing the condition in order to control it as much as possible and thus limit long term negative effects, or disabilities, as much as possible.
Remember: Knowledge + Action = Power!
