Welcome to Health Power’s African American Health Channel. African Americans have a long and rich history of contributing to the development and strength of this nation, including many outstanding accomplishments in the health field. Yet, instead of benefiting from the U.S. health system as much as mainstream Americans, they have major health disparities that often lead to poorer health and premature deaths. We are committed to the elimination of health disparities in African Americans (health disparities) as well as other racial and ethnic populations. Our primary focus is on providing authoritative, user-friendly and culturally relevant health information and promotion messages, tools and related services for minorities. In order to decrease their multiple health disparities, we are focusing on narrowing the following gaps:
- the health awareness and knowledge gap, which is needed to increase health literacy, and thus improve lifestyles and health practices;
- the health communication gap with health professionals and others; and
- the digital divide through (a) skills development and (b) making more useful/balanced Internet based choices.
