Dr. Jobe Blair, Director of the Esophageal and Lung Institute at Allegheny Health Network of Pittsburgh and Clinical Professor of Surgery at Temple University School of Medicine, discusses with Health Power’s President the connection between heartburn (GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease) and cancer of the esophagus.
Issues discussed include the increasing rate of esophageal cancer, which can be associated with GERD, obesity, male tobacco use, hiatal hernia, chronic inflammation of the esophagus, and a related condition called Barrett’s esophagus. This latter condition is a major risk factor for cancer of the esophagus, which is deadly. Good news! Treatment of Barrett’s esophagus now exists.
