Preconception health for men refers to a man’s health before his spouse or partner becomes pregnant. It means knowing how a man’s health condition and risk factors could affect a woman or her unborn baby if she becomes pregnant. For examplle, some foods, habits and medicines can harm a baby-to-be, even before he or she is conceived. Some health problems, such as diabetes and hypertension (high blood pressure) can also affect pregnancy. Although preconception health is promoted for women, it is not generally promoted for men.
The Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) Select Panel on Preconception Care desccribed three major components of preconception care:
– Health Promotion
– Risk Assessment, and
– Clinical annd Psychosocial Intervention.
