Because mental health and spiritual health are so key to overall health, we are pleased to focus on the importance of mental health in minorities/multicultural populations for National Minority Mental Health Month. In doing so, we join the National Association for Mental Illness (NAMI), and the Substance Abuse Mental Health and Mental Health Administration, both of which play a leadership role in improving the mental health of minorities, as well as society as a whole.
About 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. experiences mental illness, and although mental illness exists in about the same number of minorities and whites, minorities with mental illness are more likely to experience:
- have less access to mental health services, and
- receive a poorer quality of mental health services

- “Mental Health, Culture, Race and Ethnicity, the 2001 report of then U.S. Surgeon General, David Satcher, MD, provided a wealth of new information related to minorities, mental health, and mental illness. Much of the information in this report is still relevant today.
- NAMI Multicultural Action Center, at www.nami.org, focuses on system reform to ensure access to culturally competent services and treatment for all Americans.
- NAMI Helpline, at 800/950-6264, from 10 am to 6 pm Eastern Time Monday through Friday, assists in finding mental health services in various communities.
